This continuing education course explores the history of Missouri during the Civil War era. It begins with the controversies that erupted over slavery’s expansion into the trans-Mississippi West and concludes with the war’s legacies through Reconstruction and the end of the nineteenth century. Throughout this tumultuous period, Missouri emerges as a flashpoint of larger national tensions; a microcosm of the divisions between the North and South; and a powerful illustration of the devastation that civil war brought upon bitterly divided border states.
