The following are all free education courses for learning more about the Civil War. These courses are from a variety of sources, and any issues you may find with the courses should be addressed by the owners of the different sites. They provide very good information about important, educational and intriguing events related to the Civil War and are a great resource to further one continuing education on the Civil War.

This continuing education course explores the history of Missouri during the Civil War era. It begins with the controversies that erupted over slavery’s expansion into the trans-Mississippi West and concludes with the war’s legacies through Reconstruction and the end of the nineteenth century. Throughout this tumultuous period, Missouri emerges as a flashpoint of larger national tensions; a microcosm of the divisions between the North and South; and a powerful illustration of the devastation that civil war brought upon bitterly divided border states.

The Civil War and Reconstruction – David Blight
The Civil War and Reconstruction (HIST 119) Professor Blight offers an introduction to the course. He summarizes some of the course readings, and discusses the organization of the course is discussed. Professor Blight offers some thoughts on the nature of history and the study of history, before moving into a discussion of the reasons for Americans’ enduring fascination with the Civil War.

The Civil War and Reconstruction – Eric Foner
This continuing education course focuses on discovering how the issue of slavery came to dominate American politics, and how political leaders struggled and failed to resolve the growing crisis in the nation. A House Divided: The Road to Civil War, 1850-1861, is a course that begins by examining how generations of historians have explained the crisis of the Union.
